"The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page."
-Augustine of Hippo
At BIBS, we believe that the world is our classroom and that travel broadens students’ horizons and
enhances their understanding of our world and themselves. This is why we arrange our “Ivy League US Summer Program” for high school students who are interested to tour the Ivy League colleges and universities and meet in person admission officers and professors of these prestigious institutions. For many students, the process of figuring out which school best fits their needs is an overwhelming and confusing task. We hope that our summer program would help to transform this experience into an enriching, fun and productive summer adventure.
This summer, we are taking several of young learners from various BIBS campuses in Beijing, Chengdu and Kunming on this US Ivy League adventure!
Exploring New York City!
In China, we have a popular saying which goes like “he who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man.” Although American people do not (we hope!) have a similar saying that goes like “he who has never been to New York City is not a true man,” New York City is still unarguably an international metropolis, trendsetter, and epicenter of the arts, creativity, energy and global finance. A dream city for many, including our young learners! What a delight for them to visit the spectacular indoor Chelsea Food Market, a 118-year-old historic landmark building and the birthplace of the Oreo Cookie, and to taste their way through one of the world’s most diverse and most popular indoor food markets. How unforgettable it is to visit the Time Square they often watched in TV or read in news to observe and understand the meaning and importance of this location to New Yorkers as well as to the rest of the world!
And yes, a group photo with the Statue of Liberty is a must! As a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States, this Goddess is recognized as a universal symbol of freedom, democracy and the country of the United States of America.
With the guidance of our experienced local Envoys host educators, our students happily accepted “trivia challenge’ to learn fun facts about the islands as well as develop as a team. They also learned about the people behind the creation to better appreciate the artistry behind the statue and interior framework. What a perfect place for our young learners to begin an exploration and learning about the history and significance of immigration and immigrants to New York City as a melting pot of cultures and nationalities!
Exploring Columbia University!
Our visit to the Ivy League schools started from the Columbia University not far away from the famous Central Park. As people often say “when in Rome, do as the Romans do,” you’ve got to try the over-100-year-old subway when you are in the "Big Apple." It looks like our BIBS students were really having fun experiencing the subway and walking the New York City.!
On Campus, they were greeted and led by current Columbia Teacher’s College students for personalized tours of the university in small groups. Students took this opportunity to ask more detailed and individual-oriented questions about learning and applying to this prestigious higher learning institution. Its reputation, environment, and location really attracted some of the students who were already thinking to include it as one of their top future university targets. Well, isn’t that true that you are more likely to land higher if you dream grander?
Our student also loved the Intercultural Competence Workshop hosted by Dr. Linda Wine who is a professor at Columbia University. Dr. Wine shared with young and curious students from China her studies and experience of cross-cultural communication and learning. Heated discussion focused on common challenges for international students studying in the United States and strategies to overcome them. Students found the workshop very helpful in avoiding cultural pitfalls for them in the future.
Exploring Yale!
Now our delegation travelled to New Haven, Connecticut to explore Yale University which has been “dedicated to expanding and sharing knowledge, inspiring innovation, and preserving cultural and scientific information for future generations.”
Here on campus, BIBS students met with admissions officers from Yale for a formal information session and a tour of the campus to be able to compare urban Columbia to ‘suburban’ Yale. They also had the opportunity to meet, over a pizza dinner, members of Yale’s Asian American Cultural Center to discuss in more depth the experience of studying at a college in the United States as an Asian American, ways to engage socially and politically, and how to work to plan steps of academic, professional, and personal success. We trust that this experience and interaction would be really valuable for these 10th or 11th graders who would be planning to apply to their colleges overseas soon.
Just Keep Exploring!
In the following week, our BIBS students would continue their visit and trips to top U.S. schools in several locations. It is our sincere wish that they would take pride in how far they’ve come and have faith in how far they can go. Enjoy your journey, young BIBSers!
